Spinoza’s Dog

Spinoza's DogExcerpt from Spinoza’s Dog.

Paradise with fat sheep

From the mid-Atlantic to the Rhine
high pressure hovers over us
like the angel of clear thinking.
Great slabs of light
quarried from the flanks of the sun
and cooled by the long transport
through the emptiness of space,
are laid against the walls of buildings,
and stacked like sheets of mica on the hills.
The light is arranged in steps
so the sheep can climb to the heights
to get a view of the distant sea.
